An old fashion recipe for a batter to fry vegetables and meats

Who does not love some fried vegetables from time to time? I know that is not "politically "Right, so to speak, eat fried foods at present. But I just can not resist the fried onion rings, fried zucchini, fried mushrooms, fried cauliflower, fried pickles even come up on menus today. How about fried fish nuggets or chicken. Below is a recipe I had for years. It's a hitter, and we know that is the secret to these tasty treats for the manufacture of these fried foods irresistible. I found this recipe in a newspaper ad old for "ARGO cornstarch many years.

ARGO Cornstarch LIGHT BATTER frying meat and vegetables

This old newspaper ad says "Let the natural flavor of vegetables are fried through the light touch of Argo and Kingsford. And try these easy and delicious recipes. You will agree that light and crispy fried vegetables or chicken, which mass is really what matters. "

SHAKE LIGHT

3 / 4 cup Argo or cornstarch Kingford

1 / 4 cup flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 / 2 teaspoon salt

1 / 4 teaspoon pepper

1 / 2 cup water

1 egg, lightly beaten

In bowl, mix first 5 ingredients. Add water and egg and stir until smooth. Pour 1 quart (approximately) corn oil in large skillet to a depth of 1 / 2 ", filling no more than 1 / 3. Heat over medium heat to 375 degrees. Dip 4 cups cutup vegetables, such as squash, carrots, onions and mushrooms, or 1 pound boneless chicken breasts, skinned, cut into 1 "cubes, a few at a time, into batter. (Add mixture occasionally.) Carefully add vegetables or chicken to hot oil, a few pieces at a time. Fry 2 to 3 minutes, turning once, until golden brown and crisp. Drain on paper towels. Serves 4 to 6.
HERB BATTER: Follow basic recipe. Add one teaspoon of dried basil and 1 clove minced garlic.
Pasta beer: Follow basic recipe. Omit water. Add 1 / 3 cup of cold beer.
